We didn’t know what was in store as we boarded the Snelandia Hurtigbåt to remote Bergsfjord for mid-May spring skiing. It had been a very strange winter in Norway with low snowfall and warm temperatures so expectations were low. Our base was to be Bergsfjord Lodge.
The views create new dreams
It turns out this was one of the best weeks of the 2026 season. We were most fortunate with the weather and you can see how good the skiing was from the photos. Good company, snow, sea and silence. Bergsjord has so many fantastic objectives just a short boat ride away – though maybe I shouldn’t be writing this as part of the charm is the almost total absence of other skiers!?
But this week wasn’t just about the skiing. No, it was our hosts Morten and Matilda that made our visit so special. They could not have done more to welcome us and make us feel at home in their cosy house.
Wild flavours of the North
We ate delicious meals of locally caught fish and reindeer from the island of Silda, with sauces, chutneys and flavours made from local plants and berries. Oven-baked and salted seaweed accompanied our beer, angelica archangelica chutney our meat and pannacotta was flavoured with the new growth leaves of the Rowan tree outside the Lodge.
Particular mention has to be made of the willowherb ice cream! Matilda picks the flowers in July, boiling them with sugar and lemon juice to make a syrup which she then uses to flavour her home-made ice cream. This is something very special amongst all the other things that are special about skiing from Bergsfjord Lodge.
We hope to return.
